About Quiet Measures
An invitation to pause
Welcome
Quiet Measures is a monthly reflection on creative life.
It began, like many things, a little loosely. I was sharing creative prompts, and the occasional reflection, and noticing how helpful it was simply to check in with my own work more regularly.
So Quiet Measures became this instead.
On the first Sunday of each month, I write a short essay — part field note, part journal, part reflection. They grow out of studio life, listening, reading, parenthood, and the slow accumulation of years spent making things. Sometimes there’s a piece of music alongside them, or an image, or a fragment of sound — not to explain the writing, just to keep it company.
I think of these essays a little like journalling. Not in the sense of recording events, but as a way of noticing what’s been moving beneath the surface. Writing them helps me re-orient — to attention, to patience, to whatever season I’m in creatively. My hope is that they might do something similar for you.
There’s nothing to follow or keep up with here. The essays don’t ask anything of you. Comments and conversation are always welcome, but the invitation is simply to pause for a moment — to notice where you are, as one month gives way to the next.
All Quiet Measures essays are free to read, and always will be.
If you choose to support the project, you’re helping this small rhythm continue — a way of saying this kind of slow attention has value. From time to time, supporters may receive a small thank-you — a note, a field recording, or a creative prompt — when something arises naturally.
Quiet Measures isn’t trying to hold your attention for long. It’s simply an invitation to return — once a month — and notice where you are.
If you’re here, in any capacity, I’m glad of the company.
